Friday Favourites #23

Friday has sneaked up on me this week.  (As have the Easter holidays--I am absolutely stuck for things to do. All suggestions welcome!!)  I vaguely remember Monday but the rest is a blur.  I'm going to assume that's the sign of a good week!

Here are some of my favourite things from this week...

Favourite print: Bristol Screen Print

I've been browsing Etsy this week and this print of Bristol caught my eye.  Not only is it a gorgeous Bristol Blue in colour, it's got hot air balloons soaring over Brunel's Suspension Bridge (one of my favouritest sights ever), Cabot's Tower, one of the cathedrals (is that the one on College Green?), the SS Great Britain and an assortment of animals from the zoo.  Penguins!!

If you're a Bristolian (or just wish you lived in Bristol, and who wouldn't) then this is the print for you!  Alternatively, pop your city/area into the Etsy search and you'll probably find a jolly nice print to adorn your walls!  You could even make a feature wall of prints from places you've lived...

Favourite geeky find: Amazing Baby & Me

OMG!  I know this is a commercial for Evian (and a not-so-subtle plug for the next Spider-Man film) but I love this short so much!!

Favourite craft: DIY flower fairy lights

Lily's fabulous flower adorned fairy lights are gorgeous!  I wish I could persuade Dave that fairy lights are cool all year round, not just for Christmas... You could take them in so many different directions...maybe use pastels in spring, bright colours in summer, and so forth.  Love 'em!

Favourite travel post: Danni's day in Amsterdam

In 2000, I lived in Amsterdam.  Back then, it was probably the worst possible place for a non-smoker, anti-drug type such as myself to live, but I loved wandering around the canals and through the Vondelpark admiring all the beautiful architecture and scenery.  Plus, awesome cakes were to be found everywhere!  If you haven't been, you should totally go!  (We're taking Lucas just as soon as we're sure that he won't fling himself into a canal.)

Friday Favourites #22

Happy Friday everyone!  I'm really looking forward to this weekend; we're off to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Saturday and on Sunday, Dave and Lucas are cooking me dinner for Mothering Sunday.  The menu is a secret, and Lucas is bursting with excitement about the whole thing.  Can't wait!

Hello to any visitors from Sunny Sweet Pea (who has just posted an interview with me today)--it's lovely to have you!

Favourite Recipe: Triple Layer Mango & Passionfruit Curd Pavlova

© Not Quite Nigella
I've known Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella for years and with this sublime and decadent pavlova, I think she's surpassed Nigella herself!  It serves 18 people, so I'm going to need to engineer a large family gathering to give me an excuse to make this beauty.  Is a Pavlova Party a thing?  I could totally make it a thing...

Favourite Crochet: Ombre Crochet Throw

I'm on a real crochet and crafting kick at the moment.  Last night at our WI In Stitches group I saw a gorgeous crochet ripple blanket and fell in love.  While hunting around for patterns last night, I came across this beautiful ombre blanket.  Isn't it amazing?  I've never seen crocodile stitch before but I can't wait to give it a go!

Favourite Advice: 8 Tricks to help you get back into an exercise routine

I'll be the first to admit that the gym and I aren't friends at the moment.  I don't know why...I always love it when I'm there, it's just the getting there that's the problem.  I don't mean transport-wise...I mean motivation.

There are some fab tips in this article and I'm definitely going to give some of them a go.  If only they included some ninja tips for sneaking back into the gym without anyone commenting on my absence...

Also seen on the web this week:

♥ I loved Michelle's post about Pete and Betty, her furry friends.  Lots of gorgeous pictures of the puppies!
♥ Five things I wish I knew when I started out in Photography.  Great advice!
♥ April Fools Pranks to play on your kids!  (Although, this may be a slippery slope to go down with Lucas.  It might escalate quite quickly!!)

Friday Favourites #21

Oh, Friday!  How I love thee!  You are the gateway to the weekend and all the glorious doing nothing that comes with it.  I have a stack of books and comics to read, a snuggly blanket and my corner of the sofa (I'm a bit Sheldon about that).

Here are a few of the things I've loved this week...

Favourite Advice: 19 Tiny Things You Can Do To Make The World A (Slightly) Better Place

© yesandyes.org
I loved this post from Sarah at yesandyes.org about small random acts of kindness that are all totally do-able to make our world a tiny bit better.  I keep meaning to report the new pothole on our road to the council, so #10 is quite timely!  You should check out the rest of her blog, too; it's full of fantastically sage advice.

Favourite Geeky Stuff: The cutest Doctor Who animation ever

You all know how much I love Doctor Who, right?

This little animation made me love it even more.  The artist has managed to capture the personality of each Doctor within a scant few seconds.  It's glorious.

Favourite handmade: Eleven Things

© Eleven Things
My friend's husband has recently taken up pottery and he is turning out some beautiful pieces!  I have been eyeing up the coffee and cream set (and let's be honest, everything else) on his website.  In my head, they're tastefully decorating my (still) imaginary Welsh dresser.  One day I'll turn all of this into a reality!

Go look!!

And finally, check out this incredible video of Bristol!  I love our beautiful city!

Friday Favourites #20

Today there was a strange glowing ball in the sky; it was bright and hurt my eyes.  I am informed that this was "the Sun"...most peculiar!

This weekend we have nothing planned, which makes a nice change!  If the sun keeps shining, then I think a walk somewhere pretty would be nice.  Especially if there is cake afterwards...

Favourite Spring recipe: Coconut Milk Ice-cream with pistachio crumb and blueberries

Top With Cinnamon)
Doesn't this look amazing and indulgent?  I'm betting that it is, and in good news...it's pretty healthy!  It looks just right for a Spring dessert and luckily I happen to have everything other than blueberries in the larder, which makes it a sure thing this weekend.

Favourite craft find: 30-minute infinity scarf

I love scarves.  They never make you feel fat when you try them on, and there's a scarf out there for every occasion in every conceivable colour.  And if you can't find what you want in the shops?  It's easy to make one yourself!

What makes this scarf unique is that it is knitted with your hands and arms.  No needles!  I am dying to try this, but I suspect that I'll need to have Dave (or Lucas) on-hand with a pair of scissors to cut me free of the tangles.

Favourite Geekery: Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer

We've all been geeking out over the new Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer.  I'm thrilled that Shia LaBeouf has been replaced by Marky Mark, who is much easier on the eye and less prone to assholery.  Plus, Optimus Prime riding Grimlock is super-cool and worth the price of entry alone!

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend xx

Ask Away Friday with Tamara & Friday Favourites #19!

Meet Tamara!
I am incredibly excited to be swapping questions for "Ask Away Friday" with the lovely Tamara from Tamara (like) Camera.  The first thing you need to know about Tamara is that she is incredibly sweet and thoughtful.  The second, she takes amazing photographs that just burst with emotion.  And the third?  She writes beautiful and intimate posts about her feelings and whatever happens to be going on in her life at the time.  I try not to delve too deeply into my innermost thoughts, there's a mental "Here Be Dragons" sign hung on a few patches of my life, so I am always awed (in the truest sense) by her ability to talk so frankly about her emotions and thoughts.  She's what my Granny would have called a "deep thinker".

If you aren't familiar with "Ask Away Friday", well, it's pretty much as it sounds.  You pair up with another blogger and ask them ten questions about themselves, getting as nosey as you'd like!  To see who else is participating or to learn how to join the fun, head over to visit the hosts: Penny from The Real Housewife of Caroline County, Amber from The Bold Fab Mom, Tiffany from Mrs Tee Love Life Laughter and Stacey from This Momma’s Ramblings.

And now, to the questions!!  Afterwards, hop over to Tamara's post and see her answers to my questions.

1. The two of us seem to have a lot of TV/movies/books in common. What is an episode of Doctor Who that has made you cry (or come close) and a scene in Harry Potter (books or movies) that has done the same?

Oooh, tough question.  Doctor Who, first!  I cried for Donna and all that she had lost, and would never know that she had lost, in Journey's End.  As much as I initially railed against the casting of Catherine Tate, she portrayed Donna's growth from a selfish, shallow woman to a compassionate, assured woman over the two years (our time) she spent with The Doctor.  Her mind being wiped of all that growth and maturity felt like the cruellest possible fate, a long, slow death if you will.  I was very surprised to find myself crying over that one!

In terms of Harry Potter, I cried at Sirius's death.  But!  Only when I read the book.  We re-watched Order of the Phoenix at the weekend and it just doesn't have the same impact on-screen.

2. I know you love to read. What's a book that changed your life/perspective and stayed with you long after you read it?

This is such a hard question!  I don't think any books I've read have left a massive mark on me, but I do remember thinking a lot about religion after reading Terry Pratchett's Small Gods.  PTerry is very incisive and has a great deal of wisdom and insight hidden amidst the wit and humour.

“What have I always believed?
That on the whole, and by and large, if a man lived properly, not according to what any priests said, but according to what seemed decent and honest inside, then it would, at the end, more or less, turn out all right.”
― Terry Pratchett, Small Gods

3. Do you have any large collections of something (other than books) in your house?

Do drifts of toys or piles of laundry count?  No?  Damn.  Shame you discounted books--Dave has over a thousand graphic novels (aka comics) in the computer room!

We have quite the collection of DVDs and I've almost finished my collection of Doctor Who DVDs.  Dave has a collection of superhero figurines which really need to expand onto a second shelf...

005
There's quite a bit more on the shelf these days, but 'tis hard for a shortie to photograph!
We do have a collection of sketched from comic cons and pages of original comic book art that we've bought, but I wouldn't describe them as large...

4. If you could meet one person you haven't met yet, who would it be and why?

I pondered this question for a couple of days.  I feel like I should say someone tremendously important and worthy like Leonardo Da Vinci, but really I think I'd like to meet Nigella Lawson.  We'd have coffee, cake and later on...cocktails.  I'd like to meet the woman behind the image and have a really good gossip about food, fame and crazy relationships.

5. What is your favorite blog post that you have written?

I think my favourite blog post is the one I wrote just after our summer holiday last year.  We stayed at Chark Farm, a working dairy farm in Cornwall--our second time visiting--and I think that my post perfectly captured the amazing time that we all had there, despite some rather wet weather.

Lucas loves going out and feeding the animals first thing in the morning and checking the nesting boxes for still-warm eggs; I love turning them into scrambled eggs and omelettes.  You can roam through the little vegetable garden and gather runner beans, rhubarb and occasionally some berries if Fluffy the pig hasn't marauded through the garden recently!  I'm hoping for non-stop sunshine and lashing of fun when we're there again this summer...this time with almost all of Dave's family in tow!

6. What has been your favourite place (or places) to travel or visit (if it's local)?

I loved visiting Rome.  I went there a few years ago, actually it's more like ten years now I think about it, with my friend Pauline.  We had great fun flirting with the Italian men, and criss-crossing the city in search of the best pizza and gelato.  I loved the Capuchin Crypt ossuary, full of beautiful and macabre decorations made from skeletons by the Capuchin Monks.  You haven't lived until you've seen a chandelier made from pelvises, I always say!  (Well, it's not strictly necessary, but the human body is all kinds of cool.)  I was also stunned by the beauty of many of the statues and fountains.

7. If I came to visit you, where would you take me? (I'm going to love and dream about your answer, I just know it!)

I love this question--it's going to be so much fun to answer!!  Okay, so we're going to make a day of it...and unsurprisingly it revolves around food a little bit.

First up, breakfast at Yurt Lush.  Everyone should have breakfast in a yurt at least once in their life!  Excellent local food and I adore their chai lattes--I could drink them all day.

Afterwards we'd hop into the car and zoom over to Wales to go to The Doctor Who Experience!  We took Lucas at New Year (another post I have yet to write up, whoops!) and were very surprised to see that they had The Moment and Handles on display already.  The experience part of "The Experience" is rather fantastic and I won't spoil it for you just in case!  You can roam around the museum for as long as you like afterwards and even clamber inside a Dalek!

We should have afternoon tea at Thornbury Castle, a Tudor castle only a few miles from our house.  You can't go wrong with a proper afternoon tea on silver salvers, with tiny finger sandwiches and exquisite little cakes as well as scones and clotted cream.  Afternoon tea is definitely my favourite meal of the day!

And assuming we still have room...dinner at Riverstation, out on the balcony--in dreamland it's always sunny and dry, yet not too hot--overlooking the river as yellow river ferry boats zip through the water occasionally disturbing swans who honk indignantly at them.

8. What's the funniest thing Lucas has ever said to you?

My mind went blank as soon as I read the question.  Then I asked Dave, and his mind went blank, too!  Luckily Facebook is a useful aide memoir...

At bedtime one night...

"Mummy, do you like One Direction?" said Lucas.

I, shuddering internally, said, "No, they're not my sort of music.  I like Metallica, not boy bands."

Lucas thought for a moment, then came back with this gem: "But they're a boy band, too!"

You can't fault his logic.  He was most peeved that I cried with laughter, though!  (And Metallica is totally not a boy band!)

9. Share a favourite photo you took and tell me a story about it. What was going through your head when you took it, what's it about, what happened that day, etc.?

I took this photo of Dave and Lucas almost two years ago when we were walking home from school through the woods.  I can't believe Lucas was wearing shorts in March!!

Dave had broken his collarbone playing football (soccer) with Lucas a few days beforehand, hence the snazzy sling, and since it was a lovely day we walked to school together to collect Lucas.  On the way home, we adventured through the woods, as I wanted to look for bluebells,  I got distracted by the flowers and when I looked up, they were forging their way forward confidently. just like they do through life.  I love my boys.

10. Five favourite songs always on your playlist throughout your life?

I seem to add a favourite song every few years, so this reflects my musical evolution, if you will.  That sounds a bit smug, doesn't it?  It's not meant to, honest!  I've linked to videos/recordings so you can wallow in nostalgia with me, too!

Free - Wishing Well.  My Dad never listened to current music (and I can't blame him since I don't listen to the dross that's in the charts these days).  I have fond memories of going out for a drive in the car with him on weekends and listening to Free at top volume in the car, scaring the sheep as we zoomed past!
Guns N' Roses - Welcome To The Jungle. This track, and Appetite For Destruction as a whole define my teenage years.  I always feel young (and slightly belligerent) when I listen to the album!
Metallica - No Leaf Clover. This is chronically underplayed but we were lucky enough to hear it live at Wembley a few years ago.  I sang myself hoarse.  This song is always on our playlist when we go on holiday--the three of us always sing along.
Metallica - Turn The Page.  I love this cover of the Bob Seger classic.  There's something about it that always tugs at my heart strings.  Maybe the video has something to do with it?
Santana (feat. Everlast) - Put Your Lights On - It was a toss-up between this and Smooth for the last spot on my mini-playlist.  The lyrics can be taken in so many different ways and the guitar is just beautiful.  Santana is probably the greatest guitarist of all time...when he plays it speaks to your soul.

Thanks so much, Tamara!  You should all hop over to her blog to see her answers to my questions, too!

* * *

It's been a while since I've remembered to write my Friday Favourites--whoops!  Here are a few things I'm loving just now...

Favourite TV series: Person of Interest

I am busily catching up on season one of Person of Interest via Netflix, and I can hardly believe that I managed to miss such a bloody fantastic bit of TV for a whole year (or more)!!  Jim Caviezel, who I have belatedly recognised as Jesus Christ from The Passion of the Christ, is so amazingly fluid as John Reese, a fugitive ex-CIA operative.  I could cheerfully watch him fight all day long.  It's probably mostly fight choreography, but he pulls off all his fight scenes with ruthless and brutal efficiency. J'approve.

Michael Emerson is brilliant as Harold Finch, paranoid genius and master of dry put-downs.  It's nice to see him in a role which, while still creepy, doesn't terrify me as much as Ben Linus (LOST) or his guest appearance on L&O: SVU.

The plot, in case you don't know it, is that Finch recruits Reese to help prevent crimes before they happen, via information from a Machine that he invented.  It's a glorious mash-up of tropes from Minority Report, spy thrillers (John Reese shares Jason Bourne's efficient and improvisational fighting style), with elements of The Terminator and LOST chucked in.  Not to mention a bit of social commentary on the now omnipresent and rarely questioned amount of surveillance we're all under these days.  And best of all...it works.

Also, last week The Independent has told us all that "binge watching" TV is actually good for us.  So, I need feel no guilt about romping through PoI or House of Cards when Lucas goes to bed!

Favourite Internet Discovery: Ice Music

I was ten when I realised that ice could be more than just a slippery winter annoyance.  We read an article on the Quebec Winter Carnival at school and saw pictures of the amazing ice sculptures that artists create every winter.  Over the years I've heard of ice hotels--loved seeing one (albeit a mock-up) in Die Another Day--and ice bars but making music from ice?  That's a new one on me.

You absolutely need to click through then scroll down to the bottom of the article to hear a clip of the music.  It's stunning!

Friday Favourites #18

Hooray for Friday!  I'm sure that a whole extra day has been added to this week--it's felt oh-so long.  This week I've been mostly wondering why I felt dreadful, before finally realising that my ear infection was back.  I am now BFFs with antibiotics again and taking it easy for the foreseeable...

Friday Funny

Photo via the Bristol Post
Last Thursday morning Bristol commuters spotted a Hollywood-style Bristoland sign perched on the side of the Avon Gorge opposite the Portway.  No one knows who put it up there, but it's pretty eye-catching!

Favourite Trailer

Did you know that they're making a TV series based on From Dusk Till Dawn?  Man, I love that film.  George Clooney at his finest, and Quentin Tarantino was perfect as his freakishly creepy brother.  I was a bit sceptical when I heard about a series, but the trailer looks awesome!  I have no idea if a UK channel will pick up the series, but if not, hopefully Netflix will be my friend...

Favourite Book

I've been eating primal on and off for a couple of years, more "off" of late, if I'm honest.  I've been relying so much on sweet potatoes, and starchy veg with hardly a sniff of greenery gracing my plate and plenty of primal baked goods around the house; it's no wonder that I've completely stopped losing weight.  I spotted "Cavewomen Don't Get Fat" in the New Releases section on Amazon and picked it up on a whim.  Despite the title's obvious riff on French Women Don't Get Fat, it's a pretty solid piece of science and a decent introduction to paleo eating.  I'm working through Esther's two-week paleo detox plan which has zero sweet potatoes or treats, exactly what I need to get me back on track!

Favourite Hair

Source
I've been admiring this gorgeous floral up-do by Oh Joy! for the last couple of days.  It's billed as being easy, but I'm pretty sure that Joy's fingers are more nimble than mine.  I loved her confession that she rarely uses a hairdryer as she doesn't really know what to do with it...I thought I was the only one!!  Maybe I don't have to hand back my girl card after all.

Friday Favourites #17

It's Friday!  This weekend is going to be awesome!  There's going to be a bit of DIY, a birthday party, a trip to Atomic Burger with friends, and hopefully some pottering around a museum.  What do you have planned this weekend?

Favourite film

We finally got round to watching Red 2 last night.  I absolutely loved Red at the cinema, but for whatever reason we never managed to catch it at the cinema.  When I grow up I want to be Helen Mirren's Victoria, she's awesome.  Heck, I'd settle for being Helen Mirren who is every bit as awesome as her character, but probably with less bullets.

Favourite street art

I know, I know...I'm rabbiting on about street art two weeks in a row?  These are cute and inventive and well worth a peek!  The hug above makes me smile every time I see it, and the knitted R2-D2 is beyond amazing!  Check them out here.

Favourite mug

via Not On The High Street
I do love a good mug, and this one is perfect for me as I often find inspiration at the bottom of a mug of coffee.  (Or two.)  I've also been known to find my get-up-and-go lurking there, too.

"My Thinking Cup" Mug, from Not On The High Street

Favourite past/present photographs

1982 and 2005, Paris
A friend of mine shared this link on Facebook and it was so amazing that I just had to share it myself.  London-based photographer Chino Otsuka has taken nostalgic to a new level by photoshopping her present-day self into photos from her childhood.  It's beautifully done, and thoroughly believable, as though she's taken a trip in the TARDIS and cheekily posed in the original photographs.  It also makes me think of the age-old question: "What would you say to your younger self?"

Friday Favourites #16

Lucas went back to school this week and the house has been so quiet without him.  It's astonishing how much noise one small child can create just by being!  All things considered, it's been a good week, but I could have done without being ill yesterday.

Favourite TV show
Okay, so I know this came out in 2003, but I was caught up in a wedding planning frenzy back then, so didn't watch it.  Since then, I've somehow managed to miss ever single repeat and despite it being on my list for a couple of years, LoveFILM have failed to send it to me.  I may or may not have done a jig of excitement when I spotted it on Netflix a few days ago, but have been happily mainlining it ever since.

I am loving the dark comedy, especially the ignominious nature of George's death, her sister Reggie's response (which is both emotional and hilarious), and all the misadventures that happen to George as she settles into her new role as a Grim Reaper.  Definitely one to watch!!

Favourite "street" art
© Ruddy Muddy
This week the Norfolk newspapers and then the nationals picked up the story of "Ruddy Muddy", the Norfolk delivery driver who has taken to drawing on the mud and dirt on the sides of his white delivery van.  I've never seen a van with anything other than the ubiquitous giant cock and balls drawn in the dirt, or "Wash me!" written on it; I'm hoping that Ruddy's graffilthy art catches on.  It's so nice to see someone doing something different and beautiful!

Favourite LEGO

The Simpsons is coming to LEGO!  I'm pretty stoked about this--the set looks awesome with a house that opens up, all the bedrooms...heck, there's even Homer's car in the garage!  Unsurprisingly there's a hefty price tag to go with all this awesome.  We're looking at about £179.99 in the UK and $200 in the USA.   I generally leave all the LEGO building to Dave and Lucas, but if I suddenly won the Lottery I'd sequester myself in a locked room and build this beauty all by myself.

(The video starts off a bit slowly, so skip to 1:30 for the good stuff!  Sorry, LEGO.)

Favourite Blog Posts

♥ This week I laughed until I cried as I read Betty the Puppy's takeover of Michelle's blog, Life Outside London.  We've always known Betty is gorgeous, but I never knew she was hilarious, too!
♥ Rhiannon's Elfen Leaf Cloak Clasp tutorial, inspired by The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings is awesome!
♥ I loved Jenny's post about the seal pups at Horsey!  Seal pups are possibly the most adorable animal in the world; I can't believe how close she got to the pups.

Friday Favourites #15

Happy first Friday of 2014!  I hope the New Year is treating you all well, so far.  Right now, we're enjoying a break in the rain--the sun actually came out for a little while!

Favourite Photography Tips
Source
I love Lucy's photography on her blog.  Her images are so dreamy, with imaginative and beautiful composition, so I was thrilled when I saw that she'd made a guest post on improving blog photography.  I'm planning to take her suggestions on-board and looking forward to having even more fun with my new camera!

Favourite Cookbook
We rang in the new year with a curry from The Hairy Bikers Great Curries cookbook.  This time round I made Chicken Makhani (also known as Butter Chicken) which was nothing short of sublime.  This is the cookbook that has made me finally realise, after years of cooking curries, that there is a world of difference between making your own curry powder and just opening a tub.  Their Chicken Korma is delicious, the Thai-ish Sticky Pork Curry was absolutely awesome and I love their recipe for Coconut Rice.  My copy is bristling with post-it notes and slips of paper with notes jotted on them, and my spice collection is ever-expanding, but my tummy is very happy.  Even better, lots of their recipes are low-carb friendly and the Coconut Rice recipe is easily adapted to use cauliflower "rice".  Perfect for the inevitable January slim-down!!

Favourite Blogging Tips

If you haven't already discovered Bonjour, Blogger! then you're in for a treat.  It is a fantastic treasure trove of information and resources for bloggers.  Their recent post about keeping your (blogging) resolutions is brilliant, and jam-packed with information.

Favourite Foodie TV Programme
Okay, so it hasn't aired yet, but I am massively excited about The Taste (UK version)!  Not only am I firmly in Team Nigella, but I have had a cheffy crush on Tony Bourdain for years.  It's also nice to see a TV show which focuses on well, the taste of the food, rather than the personality of the chef.  (Something which Masterchef Australia was very guilty of this year, much to my annoyance.)
Begins Tuesday 7th January, 2100, Channel4.

Festive Friday Favourites

Happy Friday, everyone!  Twelve sleeps till Christmas!

My little car has passed its MOT with flying colours, so with no fear of a massive garage bill, I can get my shop on!  (A December MOT is just evil.)  I've spent a happy couple of days shopping and I think that I've bought almost everything...

Famous last words?

Favourite Decorations: Star Wars Snowflakes

via ManMade
Our neighbourhood seems to have gone snowflake crazy.  I've seen lots of paper snowflakes appearing in windows.  I haven't seen any Star Wars themed ones...we should get right on that.

Favourite Crafted Gifts: Last minute handmade gifts from the Purl Bee

© The Purl Bee
The Purl Bee blog is one of my favourite places to haunt for knitting and crochet inspiration.  If I ever manage to make it to America again, I'll make a beeline for their shop which looks absolutely gorgeous in every single photo I've seen.  It's yarn heaven, basically.

Their round-up of last minute handmade gifts is particularly handy if you always feel a twinge of guilt--like me--for being a crafty person who never seems to actually give crafty gifts.  I always remember too late, but now I have no excuse as these are all fantastically quick!

Favourite Recipes: Thoroughly English's Hamper Series

© Thoroughly English
I've been really enjoying Bess's Christmas Hamper series over at Thoroughly English.  Not only is she running an amazing giveaway to win a hamper stuffed with all sorts of homemade goodies, she's giving us the recipes for everything!

Favourite App: Clumsy Ninja

I have to say straight up that our friend Rob was the lead artist on this project, but that doesn't take away from how fun and awesome this game is!  I'm afraid that my ninja is still very clumsy--I got sidetracked from training because tickling him is so much fun--but Dave and Lucas have been playing avidly and their ninja is slightly less clumsy but still very cute!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday Favourites

Happy Friday, everyone!  It's been a busy old week as ever...

We're starting to get geared up for Christmas.  Lucas has just been cast as one of the narrators in his school play, and has started learning Christmas carols in the choir.  We drove home singing "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" last night which was lush!

Jack Frost drew lots of beautiful ice patterns in my car the other morning, and there are reports in the paper that snow is imminent next week.  Now, since I heard about this being in the Express I'm not putting a lot of stock in it, but I suppose now is a good time to stick a winter emergency kit in the car...

Making a Winter emergency kit for your car:

Once upon a time I broke down on the motorway, en-route to soft-play, without coats for either Lucas or myself, or any supplies, and to add insult to injury...it started to snow.  Luckily the AA came along pretty sharpish and rescued us, and the snow didn't really amount to anything...but still.  Not much fun, and really I should have been better prepared.

I now keep a first-aid kit, extra coats, hi-vis gear and a torch in the car.  I should add some little gel warming pads, a small shovel, and bottled water and (given the alleged weather forecast) a little shovel.  A couple of blankets wouldn't go amiss, either.

You can buy emergency kits at Halfords (and similar places) or put one together for yourself.  Maybe add a book or toy to keep little ones occupied?  Odds are that you won't need to use your kit, but better safe than sorry!

Favourite Recipe: Key Lime Pie

Image via Shelf5
My friend Sam made a Key Lime Pie last week--apparently Tesco's bottled lime juice is from Key Limes--and it was scrumptious.  I've eaten a ton of Key Lime Pies over the years on trips to the States, but never made my own.  I'm now thinking that I should get into the kitchen and bake one ASAP!

The Hairy Bikers have a respectable looking recipe here, but I would replace the whipped cream topping with meringue as that's how I know Key Lime Pie.  (I'm told that it is served both ways in the Florida Keys, but I've only ever had it with meringue.  I'm always wary of creamy topped pies in America after my first (and only) encounter with Cool Whip!)

Friday Funny:

Favouritest thing EVER!

This prequel for the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who special was a massive surprise yesterday!  I waited until Dave got home and then the three of us watched it together.  It is so nice to be right about the John Hurt Doctor!  And I loved seeing The Sisterhood of Karn, keepers of the Sacred Flame again, too.  Plus!  Eight!!

In one week we'll all be piled into the car, zooming towards London for the official Celebration event.  Dave managed to snag me an autograph with Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) which I am still super-excited about, and we're having a family TARDIS photo taken.  I must start practising smiling nicely for the camera...

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
